Current Classroom Read Alouds

Our current read aloud is titled The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.  This is excellent book about life in an oppressive society.  The story revolves around a girl named Katniss Everdeen who volunteers to take her sister's place in the dreaded Hunger Games.  The rules of the game are simple: Only one person is allowed to live.  Since each district is forced to submit one boy and one girl, Katniss will have to survive against 23 other competitors.  Will Katniss be able to survive? Will she be forced to kill another competitor?
You may be wondering why I chose to read a book like The Hunger Games to the class.  This book offers a powerful contrast of what life could be like under an oppressive government to a life in the United States of America.  I teach the Bill of Rights right along with the book.  We've already discussed the right to bear arms.
Please make sure to talk with your child about what we're reading in class! I hope that they'll have a lot of connections to our constitution!!
